The Little Hamlet
Before Kings Park came to be, the suburban hamlet in Smithtown was known as St. Jonhland. In the 1800s, Episcopal priest Augustus Muhlenberg came to Long Island to find a place to build a refuge for New York City's orphans, war veterans, and poor children. He established the society of St. Johnland. The community developed around the complex and was named St. Johnland.
When the Long Island Railroad arrived in 1872, the officials in Brooklyn decided to purchase property adjoining Muhlenberg's tract. Despite local objections, in 1885, they established the Kings County Farm to care for the poor and mentally ill. The town's name was eventually changed to "Kings Park" because it was considered the park that belonged to the Kings County Psychiatric Center.

Kings Park is noted for its schools, numerous parks, and natural environment. A popular attraction is the Sunken Meadow State Park. Also known as Governor Alfred E. Smith State Park, it is a 1,287-acre state park located in the Town of Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York on the north shore of Long Island. Kings Park is also home e to Leo P. Ostebo Kings Park Heritage Museum, the only school community-managed town heritage museum in the United States.
